After being in Dominica for 10-plus days, there’s so much to break down about what to do, where to stay, the currency, and so many other important details that you should know before embarking on your journey to the Nature Island.
I plan on making several more trips to Dominica, so be sure to check the Dominica Travel Guide regularly as this guide will be consistently updated.
Covid Restrictions In Dominica
As with most of the countries within the Caribbean, you will not need to show proof of vaccination and pre-arrival testing for vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers has been removed. However, when traveling to Dominica be sure to use caution and limit your time around people if you’re sick or know that you could have been exposed to Covid.
What Language is Spoken in Dominica
Dominica is a mixture of dialects and different languages, but the most spoken and official language on the island is English. Before Dominica was colonized by the British, as with other Caribbean Islands, the French fought for control over Dominica. This resulted in a French-Creole dialect being spoken by many of the local population. French-based creole is a mixture of the French language combined with African grammatical rules and vocabulary.
What’s The Currency in Dominica?
In Dominica the Eastern Caribbean dollar (XCD) is used. While in Dominica you’ll frequently hear the currency being referred to as EC to differentiate from the U.S. dollar.
Currently, the exchange rate for the Eastern Caribbean dollar to United States dollar is the following:
$1 USD = $2.70 Eastern Caribbean dollar
The United States Dollar is also accepted on the Island and is a valid form of payment in most establishments. If you can, it’s convenient to exchange your money before coming into the island. However, the banks and atm’s in Dominica are efficient and safe to use. At most major hotels in Dominica you’re also able to exchange your U.S. dollars to Eastern Caribbean dollars.
Entry Requirements
All visitors are required to show proof of onward travel to their next destination with visiting Dominica. A valid passport is required to enter into Dominica. No visa is required for citizens from the United States for up to six months.
When To Travel To Dominica
In my opinion, there’s literally never a bad time to visit Dominica and each season and time period has its perks. October – January is Dominica’s rainy season. No matter where I travel to, I always enjoy traveling during a country’s rainy season because this usually means that there are fewer crowds, cheaper prices, and the rains are usually short. If you don’t mind traveling during hurricane season or mind having a few cloudy days during your vacation, then plan to travel during these days.
One of the main perks of traveling during the rainy season in Dominica is that you’ll have the opportunity to attend the World Creole Music Festival. This is an invigorating music festival that hosts a variety of Creole and Caribbean musicians.
Where To Stay In Dominica
The beauty of Dominica is that there’s literally not a bad area to choose when looking where to stay. I recommend staying in the capital of Roseau for part of your stay. The Fort Young Hotel will serve as an excellent base while you explore all of what Dominica has to offer. Although the hotel is in very close proximity to restaurants, bars, and other forms of entertainment, the Fort Young Hotel itself is more of a seaside resort as opposed to your average hotel. While at the Fort Young you’ll have access to different world-class restaurants, bars, a rooftop with ocean views and where you’ll catch a beautiful sunset, a relaxing spa, and an excursions center all located within the hotel.
If you’re looking for more of a quieter stay while being immersed in nature, I highly recommend booking a few nights at the Manicou River Resort. The resort is located a little over an hour away from the capital of Roseau. It’s a boutique treehouse resort experience that will blow your mind! The staff at Manicou River Resort takes into account of any dietary needs that you might have and prepares you delicious meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
What To Visit While In Dominica
While in Dominica you will never run short of things to do and will never be in an inconvenient location in order to experience Dominica’s beauty. During my trip to Dominica I was able to visit the Fresh Water Lake, Titou Gorge, Ti Kwen Glo Cho, and Trafalgar Falls. Click here to see the 2 must do activities while visiting Dominica
How To Get Around In Dominica
If you’re brave enough, the best way to get around while in Dominica is by renting a vehicle. Keep in mind that in Dominica, the population drives of the right side of the road. This is opposite to the United States driving system. If this doesn’t make you nervous, then you’re better off renting a vehicle and exploring Dominica at your leisure. Taxi’s on the island are plentiful, safe, and reliable. If you’re in need of a taxi your hotel or accommodation host will connect you with one. There will also be plenty at the airport for you to choose from.
