In between all that we have going on, or lack thereof, keeping up with our natural hair can be one of the last things on our minds. Natural hair wigs serve 3 major purposes in every natural-haired woman’s life.
1) Act as a protective style.
2) Mask our lazy/bad hair days.
3) Gives us the option to switch our looks.
Ever since cutting off the remainder of my colored-treated hair back in February, I’ve been donning protective styles in order to retain length.
My protective styles of choice have been mostly box braids, passion twists, and the occasional pinned-up twist style, without the addition of added hair. Although I enjoyed the look that these protective styles gave, it was difficult to thoroughly cleanse and properly moisturize my natural hair.
What Made Me Decide To Search For Natural Hair Wigs & Hair Companies That Were Black-Owned?
This protective style conundrum prompted my search for alternative protective styling methods. Although I’ve never seen myself as a “wig girl”, natural hair wigs offered the perfect way to properly care for my hair with weekly cleansing & moisturizing treatments all while retaining length and maximizing growth.
In the midst of my search in finding natural hair wigs, I was annoyed, but unsurprised, to find out that the many natural hair wig Instagram pages that I’d been following were not Black-owned.
Witnessing a majority of non-Black-owned companies, whose racial background has a historical record of disrespect towards a community of people that they view as a cash cow, selling products specifically targeted to Black women didn’t sit well with my spirit, especially in lieu of our current racially/politically heightened climate.
This was the genesis of my search in finding Black-owned natural hair wigs.
