In my search of finding Black-owned natural hair wigs, I came across Fingercomber wigs. Fingercomber is a Black-owned natural hair wig company that specializes in providing affordable synthetic wig options. I was prompted to purchase their wig because of their affordability and me wanting to opt for loose natural hairstyles while being on a long-term protective styling journey.

I purchased the Sof-Kinx HD Unit which was $98.00. Since I ordered the Fingercomber wig last minute and needed it to take to my trip to Cartagena, I ended up purchasing their express shipping option. In total, I paid $123.00 for Fingercomber’s Sof-Kinkx HD Unit.

Due to me being in a rush to pack in addition to coming out of Winter Storm Uri, I didn’t get a chance to take photos of the unboxing process. However, I was able to film a detailed review of the Fingercomber Sof-Kinx HD Unit for you while in Cartagena.

How easy was Fingercomber Wig Sof-Kinx HD Unit to put on?

Let me start off by saying I never thought in a million years that I would ever become a “wig person”. To me, wigs seemed complicated and something that my grandmother would wear. HOWEVER, due to me being on a long-term protective styling journey, I decided to give the wig life a try.

Upon opening my Fingercomber wig from its package, I was extremely surprised by how soft it was. In all honesty, my Fingercomber wig was wrapped in tissue paper inside the box that it came in. Since I was due to leave for Cartagena a few days after receiving the package, I stuffed my tissue paper-wrapped wig into my already too-full suitcase.

For comparison, I bought a human hair wig from a black-owned brand a few months prior, and upon taking that wig out of the package it was nowhere near as soft as the one purchased from Fingercomber. It was my first time EVER wearing a wig, and with a few YouTube wig tutorials under my belt, I felt pretty confident about securing it to my head.

My Fingercomber Wig Sof Kinks Unit HD was easy to put on and secure to my head. It comes with three mini attachment combs for the sides of your head and then for the back.

[ DISCLAIMER: I didn’t realize it until later, like a few weeks later, but I applied the wig upside down in the video, Ooops…lol. The third comb attachment goes in the back of your head and not the front. (This is common knowledge to the majority of wig wearers) ]

How did the Fingercomber Wig Sof-Kinx HD Unit feel while wearing it?

The Fingercomber Wig Sof-Kinx HD also has adjustable straps. This is great for those with smaller heads. And for those, like myself, with a larger head circumference or those with really thick hair.

The circumference of the Fingercomber Wig is stretchy enough to fit the size of your head without it feeling too tight.

Did the Fingercomebr Wig Sof-Kinx HD Unit look real?

I was a bit apprehensive about purchasing a half wig due to it not appearing natural. My fear was purchasing a wig that looked like an obvious wig. I left out a small section of leave-out along my hairline and flat-twisted it so that it can have somewhat of a stretched-out curl pattern.

This turned out to be the perfect method to effortlessly blend my leave-out with the Fingercomber Wig Sof-Kinx HD Unit for a natural look. I was able to wear several half-up styles as well as wear my hair completely out while still being able to achieve an authentic look.

Many people that I came across would stop to ask me about my hair, thinking that I grew it from my scalp! Also, with me being in a humid and hot climate while wearing the Fingercomber Wig, my natural hair leave-out along my hairline began to swell and poof.

Due to the wig’s texture and fullness, it was able to camouflage the shrinkage and swellness that the humidity caused my natural hair to start reverting back to.

With the assistance of bobby pins, I was able to parts of the front part of the Fingercomber wig to make it appear as a full wig without showing my natural hairline.

This was a HUGE PLUS for days when I didn’t feel like unraveling my flat twists

How to care for your Fingercomber Wig Sof-Kinx HD Unit?

These are the current care instructions that came with the Fingercomber Wig Sof-Kinx HD Unit.

For best results, finger comb to detangle, being careful when separating the curls at the tips, in order to avoid frizz. The unit can be washed and conditioned, but be sure to detangle before doing so, and always allow the unit to air-dry completely before wearing or manipulating it. In order to re-boost the textural curl pattern, detangle the unit, braid it tightly into 10-15 sections, and add a perm rod to the end of each braid.
Run hot water from the top, over the unit, and allow it to air-dry completely before removing the rods and opening the braids. Finger comb to style

However, I cared for it slightly differently. I pretty much wore the Fingercomber Wig every day for about two months straight.

The care for the wig wasn’t high maintenance as most days I would place the wig on some sort of make-shift wig stand, such as on a lampshade. About once a week I would lightly spray my hair with a water-based leave-in conditioner.

I would then add a small amount of a light-weight hair butter to the pads of my fingers in order to finger twirl the ends of each curl.

I haven’t experimented with washing my Fingercomber Wig Sof-Kinx HD Unit yet, so I’ll have to update you all on how I wash, condition, and reset the curls.

Overall thoughts on the Fingercomber Wig Sof-Kinx HD Unit?

I was a skeptic for the longest time and had a million questions about purchasing a synthetic wig. Would it itch? Will it blend well? Will it get matted? etc.

All of my questions and more were answered when I purchased & began wearing my Fingercomber wig regularly. Upkeep was simple and stress-free.

Even on days when I didn’t feel like putting my wig on my makeshift wig stand and just laid it on the dresser or table, it still wore perfectly as if I just took it out of its package.

Benefits of Fingercomber Wig Soft-Kinx HD Unit:

  • Easy to put on
  • Comes out of the packaging soft and ready to put on
  • No need to condition it before wearing the wig
  • Easy to manipulate and blend with your natural hair
  • The circumference of the wig is stretchy to fit large head sizes, but adjustable enough to fit smaller sizes

Cons of Fingercomber Wig Soft-Kinx HD Unit:

I purchased the kinky roller set with a pinch of salt. I read over 20 reviews and watched at least five customers’ reviews before making the purchase. I ordered it on January 22, 2023, and it was delivered on February 13, 2023. However, I wasn’t home, and it was taken back to the post office, and I picked it up the following morning. I opened it, and it was set with rollers; that was okay, but as I took out a few of the rollers, the hairs weren’t combed; I overlooked that what got me was I had paid for a pinch of salt, and they sent me a wig with two strands of salt, and when I complained they had the nerve to respond, “… it is not going to be a full gray wig or a ton of gray as it is meant for blending.” So I removed all the rollers, and there is no gray, with the exception of the two strands located in the back of the unit. The wig looks old, nothing like the picture. I didn’t have the great experience others had. I waited weeks for a mess. I am disappointed and angry. The fact that I had to wait for a response upset me that much more. Why is there no number to contact Finger comber? I am currently waiting to see what they plan to do. I am not exaggerating. Here are the pictures of the front and back of the unit I picked up yesterday from the post office.

Thank you for sharing your experience about them! Although I didn’t have that experience so many women have come forward sharing experiences similar to yours. I can only imagine how I would have felt to order something with high expectations of their product and customer service and getting something completely different. Hopefully comments such as yours inspires them to change how they run things, especially since their product concept and price point is pretty good.
