The amount of people patronizing Black-owned cosmetics brands has tremendously increased over the past few years. I, along with many other Black consumers, prefer to buy Black first before spending our dollars outside of our community.

With the desire to build a cohesive makeup collection, I began my quest of creating a master list of Black-owned cosmetics brands that I could regularly patronize. Black-owned cosmetics brands are setting a new standard in beauty. They have set themselves apart from the overly commercialized brands that most women are accustomed to.

These Black-owned cosmetics brands cater to the unique skincare needs of women of color as well as using ingredients that are culturally significant to us, such as incorporating shea butter into their products. Many of the Black-owned cosmetics brands featured in this list were inspired to create their companies out of a lack of representation and diversity that they’ve experienced in the beauty industry.

Many of the women & men that have founded the listed brands such as Mented Cosmetics, IMAN Cosmetics, and The Lip Bar, were either models, entertainers, makeup artists, or cosmetics connoisseurs that got frustrated with proper skin-tone shades not being available to them.

With the Black-owned cosmetics brands mentioned in the Masterlist, you’ll never have the problem of settling for a shade that’s too pale. All of the featured brands cater to the lightest ivory hues to the deepest ebony complexions and over half of the brands pride themselves on formulating their cosmetics with natural ingredients.
