Hyperpigmentation treatment seems to be on the search bars of many Black women, including myself. Hyperpigmentation, although it needs no explanation, are darkened areas on the skin that occurs in small patches, can cover large areas, and can be present anywhere on the body.
The most common types of hyperpigmentation are…
- Melasma: Caused by hormonal changes. It can appear anywhere on the body, but is prevalent on the stomach (usually after pregnancy) and on the face.
- Sunspots/Liver Spots: Appear on areas on the body where sun damage and exposure have occurred.
- Post Inflammatory: Occurs due to injury or inflammation to the skin. Common cause — acne.
Due to past acne scarring and hormonal changes from birth control, I spent the majority of my early 20’s in search of a hyperpigmentation treatment that was gentle to my skin, wasn’t formulated with harsh ingredients and chemicals, and was created with highly ethical standards.
Throughout these years I gave up due to my needs not being met for the mentioned reasons. Usually, when most are in search of skincare or hyperpigmentation treatment, they frequent their nearest Sephora out of convenience.
Although Sephora is great, they lack in stocking its shelves with products made by Black-owned brands. In most cases, when you purchase skincare products from Black-owned brands the products that you’re purchasing have been formulated with melanated skin in mind.
This is hardly ever the case when you purchase from brands that aren’t Black-owned.
