In recent years Brooklyn, Williamsburg to be exact, has become the mecca of all things cool. It’s where people go to escape the sometimes overly posh borough of Manhattan. It’s where they go to be able to walk a little slower, to be one of those “Brooklyn Cool Kids”, but also to shop? Yes, to shop! If you hate following trends and take pride in having your wardrobe looking a little different from everyone else’s then Williamsburg is your go to destination. A gem located in South Williamsburg, Swords-Smith, is an original retailer that should be an essential part of your Brooklyn shopping experience.
Swords-Smith is a men’s and women’s wear boutique that’s co owned by husband and wife duo Briana Swords, a former Levi Strauss designer, and Ryan Smith, a Vogue credited graphic designer. They carry over 60+ labels all from emerging and upcoming brands which includes their own in-house label. Some of my favorite labels that you’ll fall in love with are Ali Golden, who produces feminine and modern designs hailing from San Francisco, Samantha Pleet whose whimsical designs and classic silhouettes will make you instantly fall in love. A new favorite of mine, Goenjo, is a Korean label that’s strongly influenced by art and Bjorg, a jewelry brand that’s handmade and 100% natural. Bjorg specializes in using rough precious stones intertwined with conceptual design.
The menswear that Swords-Smith carries are just aesthetically pleasing as the women’s. Robinson Les Bains is a Parisian label created in 2007 by Christophe Verot. The brand offers a diverse men’s swimwear offering as well as ready to wear pieces. Robinson Les Bains makes it easy for men to flirt with sensuality and still remain masculine. Another menswear favorite is Soulland. When you think of this brand think of a modern Scandinavian outdoorsman. Soulland is definitely for the fashionably rugged which is why many men are quickly making Soulland apart of their every day wardrobe.
If you prefer shopping at anti-fast fashion retailers, then Swords-Smith is a must stop shop especially if you want to get ahold of authentic brands who many people might not have heard of. These brands wont have contracts and deals with department stores and they especially wont have an army of underage workers manufacturing their clothing. Sometimes these designers will be working alongside the production team assisting with the manufacturing of their garments. These brands and designers are the real deal. They’re hustlers, hard workers, and passionate about what they deliver. Know that when you buy from Swords-Smith you are supporting a network of hardworking individuals who strive to bring you the best aesthetically pleasing garments and accessories at top-notch quality.
