The term unisex was coined in the 1960s and has been widely popular ever since. Especially in recent years. The unisex trend has infiltrated every market from baby names to fragrances. Who else remembers when Pete Wentz put out his unisex clothing line in 2008? Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom put out a unisex fragrance in 2011, Adam Levine’s new line for Kmart features unisex t-shirts, and unisex names have been around for ages. One of the biggest misconceptions about unisex items is that you can buy one item that can be shared between a man and a woman. This is untrue. Unisex simply means that the same product can be used or worn by either sex.
Unisex products are becoming more readily available than ever.
1. Levit 02
Levit 02 offers unisex leather goods that are menswear inspired. The sandals they produce are made of vegetable tanned leather and are available in a range of neutral colors. Unfortunately, they are not sold in the U.S. yet. According to their FAQ page, if you are interested in buying a pair you can contact them at info@levit02.com and they’ll try to work something out with you!
2. The Squad
The Squad is a chill brand for either sex. Their online shop doesn’t have a unisex section, but you’ll find they feature garments under both the men and women tabs. Not only are these pieces unisex, but if you browse the product offering, you’ll notice that almost everything they have could be worn by either sex.
3. American Apparel
While American Apparel isn’t a strictly unisex brand, if you search the keyword “unisex” on their web shop, you’ll get 76 pages of both accessories and garments. Shorts, jackets, shoes, button ups, you name it and American Apparel has it.
4. Gay Jeans
Gay Jeans is still getting their feet off the ground, and is currently on Betabrand. Betabrand is like Kickstarter for clothing lines. Gay Jeans is unique because the more you wear and wash these indigo dyed jeans they begin to change. As the indigo fades, rainbow colored threads begin to show. This gives you the opportunity to distress them as you please or let the changes form naturally. They come in different fits, both unisex, and the proceeds go to the San Francisco LGBT Center.
5. The Monocle Order
The Monocle Order carries a ton of different sunglass brands such as Point of View and Blood and Tears. The site offers four pages worth of unisex sunglasses. You may think that any sunglasses could be unisex, but think about it. Have you ever tried on a pair of glasses meant for the opposite sex and noticed that they just don’t fit right? Frames for men are too large for women and lenses on glasses for women aren’t large enough for men. Well, now you have a place to go for unique shapes and colors that can fit anyone!
It doesn’t have to be labeled unisex for you to wear it, but chances are it will fit better and more comfortably. The unisex trend is an ever-growing one and I don’t see it fading anytime soon. So wear what you like no matter what section of the store it’s hanging in.
