Designers employed fine art and a variety of artistic images for their Spring 2014 collections. They fused street murals, abstract elements and bold brushstroke and graffiti prints. Phoeobe Philo, of Celine, took her inspiration from the graffiti of Brasssai’s, a Hungarian photographer from the 20th century, photographs of the street art found in the city of Paris. Paul Gauguin, a leading post-impressionist painter who is known for incorporating bold color into his works and was also known as a nonconformist who turned his back on his own success to live on his own tropical island, had captured the attention of desigers Roberto Rimondi and Tommaso Aquilano of Aquilano Rimondi. The designers used Gauguin diametric ways as inspiration for their collection since Aquilano claimed that he has fallen out of love with the world of fashion. They integrated bold uses of color while pairing a few of their pieces with gothic mural images. I see many women taking part in this trend in increments, but only the bold and fashion forward woman will be bold enough to wear these museum worthy prints in full such as in the collections of Paule Ka, Jil Sander and Celine.
