Last week, I attended NYC’s annual Pride Festival. I’ve seen so much hatred and bigotry in my 24 years of living that being upset about it doesn’t even describe how I feel. Before going to the festival, I was coming up with all of these complex ideas on what to ask the attendees. I was really making it more complicated than what it was. While walking there, I saw a senior gay couple earnestly holding hands. Besides for each other, they had not a single care in the world. Their eyes twinkled as they looked at one another while carelessly crossing the street. I had to catch myself from staring, not because they were two gay men holding hands, but because they were in love. You could see the passion and respect they had for one another. It doesn’t matter if you’re gay, straight, bisexual or still deciding. If you have love for someone, that’s what’s most important. I hear so many people spreading their ignorance by saying that being gay is a choice and you can be cured from having feeling for the same sex. I’m sorry, but looking at the couple walking across the street is love. Love can’t be denied. Love comes unforced. Love is honest. Love is an action of endearment that should be respected by all people. Seeing the couple assured me of what I was going to ask.
