The sometimes androgynous women of the 1930’s and 1980’s such as Marlene Dietrich, Elizabeth Jagger & Grace Jones experimented with combining masculine and feminine characteristics. Everything in fashion repeats itself and that’s the same thing that is happening today. Designers such as Zaidig and Volitaire, Hood by Air, J.W. Anderson & Ann Demeulemeester have recently presented their collections with more genderless qualities. It seems like more designers, celebrities as well as street style mavens are implementing unisexual qualities into their personal style. For the Ji Oh Spring Summer 2015 presentation it was no different. Her collection, Glamboy, takes on a genderless approach to daytime uniform dressing. A more androgynous future for her collections is something that she’s striving for, but it’s also something that she desires for the entire world of fashion.
“Fashion is becoming all one and there’s no gender with anything… we see people now on the street and you sometimes have to question yourself, “is this a boy or is this a girl?”
Oh’s past collections, although still androgynous, have been a lot quieter than her current Glamboy collection. Her SS15 showcase is a reflection of who she is, quiet, demure and clean-cut. She enjoyed pushing herself outside of her comfort zone and designed a more powerful, in color, collection. She implemented potent colors like “Glamboy” red, liquid silver, baby blue as well as adding a well-tailored blue pinstripe piece to the mix. Oh wanted the inspiration of the clothing to translate into the makeup. The makeup as well as the accessories were kept very basic, clean and to a minimum.
“You can go to work in the pieces because it’s clean and simple and you can still go for an outing in the pieces because the pieces are strong.”
Overall, Oh’s SS15 collection is well versatile. You will be able to mix and match certain pieces to portray different looks. Even if being a little androgynous isn’t your thing, you will still be able to “girl” it up if need be.
