How To: Subtle Androgyny

How To: Subtle Androgyny

Androgyny Style 1, unisex fashion, androgyny, androgyny fashionAndrogyny isn’t exactly new, but in the last few years the concept has gotten quite a bit of attention. From editorial spreads to Project Runway challenges, androgyny has caught the eye of fashion lovers world wide.If you don’t know, androgyny is the combination of feminine and masculine characteristics. So, no, it isn’t a form of cross-dressing even though some may confuse the two.  A more correct way to think of it is gender neutral. The last fashion week showed us that the androgynous “trend” would be a key player in this year’s Spring/Summer looks, and many of us use elements of androgynous dressing to add an element of edge to our wardrobe. Androgyny can be so much more than just a trend, for some, it is a way of life.

Weather you decide to be a full time androgynous or, like me, like to use it as inspiration and whimsy, here are some ways you can subtly mix it into your wardrobe.

This tip is sort of a no brainer, right? While androgyny has a lot to do with attitude, you can achieve this style easily by not being “too girly.” The first step is  to buy pieces that are unisex in color. Grey, navy, burgundy, black, army or forest green are all genderless colors. Shy away from anything too pastel or too neon.

2. Straight Leg Pants

Men don’t typically wear a boot cut, nor do they tend to wear the skintight fit many women prefer. They also shouldn’t be too baggy and please, do not sag them. The boyfriend jean is a nice pick, as well as corduroys. Androgyny should not look more masculine than feminine; it should be a nice mix of both.

3. Oxfords, Converse & Combat Boots

These three styles of shoe are all extremely versatile and pretty genderless. We all know and love our Chuck Taylors, so they don’t need much explaining. The oxford shoe can give off a very Annie Hall vibe and can be used in dressier occasions.

4. Button Down Dress Shirts

I’m sure you’ve already got one of these in your closet, so reimagine it! Paired with your boyfriend jeans and oxfords, your dress shirt has a new, sexy feel.

5. Vests

I think denim vests are awesome. Try to find one that is a bit lose and hits at the hip rather than a tight, waist-length one you’d throw over your sundress. Another great style for an androgynous look are the military inspired ones.

Think tuxedo style. This can be genderless and uber sexy paired with a trouser pant. This look would be androgynous even if paired with a stiletto. Remember, it’s about a solid mix. If your look is every feeling too masculine, don’t be afraid to add a heel and some lipstick.

7. Wide Brim Hats

Try a fedora or a ranch hat, which is like those bohemian style hats you see all over the place, but with a bit of a manlier touch – think Johnny Depp. Adding a hat is a great accessory that ties everything together.

Those are just a few tips that come to mind when I think of subtle androgyny. Can you think of any that I missed? If so, tweet us @The_CoReport! Give these looks a try and tag us in your Instagram photos @TheCoReport!
