Recently bombshells such as Justine Skye, Jourdan Dunn, FKA Twigs and Tinashe have been seen in namesake labels, Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein. The items worn range from dresses, classic denim and logo infused bandeaus and bras. The reemergence of these iconic brands have opened the floodgates for other popular 90’s trends and surely has Generation X feeling nostalgic to say the least.

After drooling over the prim and proper looks that included tons of plaid, mini skirts and knee-highs given by Cher Horowitz and Dionne Davenport in Clueless, viewers weren’t as appalled as Cher and Dionne when they laid eyes on Tai Frasier. Pre-makeover Tai donned overalls, over-sized button downs, chokers and platform sneakers with no hesitation. In this culture shaping film, we were led to believe over-sized silhouettes, sneakers and flannels were unladylike and completely unacceptable.

Stilettos, ballet flats, pencil skirts and blazers are definitely timeless, staple pieces that all women should own. However, cuteness and comfort is slowly but surely becoming a daily goal of many young women and thanks to the 90s grunge era, it stretches way further than merely wearing a pair of boyfriend jeans.

Rihanna, the grunge queen, debuted her Fenty x Puma collection which was an ode to this incomparable era. Although the line was, of course, very high fashion, Rihanna made sure to include pieces that everyday girls could wear to incorporate grunge into their wardrobes like athleisure-esque oversized sweaters and thigh-high boots. In addition to the collection, her photoshoot with i-D Magazine set the tone for what would be seen on thousands of young women worldwide.

History repeats itself could not be more of a true statement, especially when it comes to the fashion industry and its latest trend that exudes the mystery and effortlessness of a cool 90s girl.
