It seems as though womenswear is constantly growing and changing every season, but throughout history, menswear is slow to evolve. We saw the greatest changes occurring in the late 1960s through the early 1970s when the peacock revolution took place. Otherwise, there were only a few changes such as bagginess of the pants, double breasted or single breasted? How many buttons? 2014 is changing all of that. Less fashion forward men may not be too sure about the latest trends, but trust me, you’ll want to incorporate them into your wardrobe soon before the changes become the new norm. 1. Shorts that fall above the knee This is a hard one for many men to accept. Just go with it. It looks nice and it shows you’re fashion savvy. This look does not work on all men but if you are of a lankier build, give it a try! The Bedford Cord Bermuda Short from Jachs is a good pair to start with. 2. The Short Suit We all thought Pharrell was just being Pharrell when he showed up to the Oscars in shorts, but this look is here to stay. And why not? It’s a great choice for summer or men who’s body temperature runs hot anyhow. It’s an updated look for a timeless classic. Try the more laid back Selected Suit with Strip look from ASOS. 3. High Waisted Trousers You may have laughed during at Joaquin Phoenix’s high waisted garb during Her, but the film’s stylist did that for a reason. In a nod to 50s resort wear, the high waisted trouser is back in action. It’s either this or a drop crotch. Your choice. Nordstrom offers the ‘Luxury Serge’ Double Pleated Trouser in several different colors. 4. Colored Pants Okay, so this one might not exactly be new but it’s certainly a game changer. Why should women get all the fun of bright colors? Even if you don’t opt for a bright red pair, a nice emerald can add a sophisticated pop of color to your look. Colored pants are also great for day or night. Criminal Damage carries a great pair of Chinos in a rust color. 5. Prints Prints for men are becoming wildly popular. Quit frankly they are taking over. You’ll see a plethora of prints on shirts, shorts, jackets, everything. Dip your toes in with stripes or polka dots. The hottest print for men this summer is, wait for it, floral. I know you’re probably shaking your head in disbelief but floral doesn’t have to be feminine. Camouflage is another hot print for men this season. Black Kaviar gives the floral an urban twist with their Gliss jacket. 6. Jewelry for men I’m not talking bulky rope chains. This season men are headed in a more delicate direction. Fine gold chains and lux leather strip necklaces and bracelets are the next big things. It appears that layering necklaces and bulky bracelets will be the newest trend. Don’t worry, brands like Me & Ro and Lazaro have products that are still masculine like Lazaro’s Silver Nail & Leather Wrapped Cuff. 7. Tunics Most men probably associate tunics with dresses. Tunics are not dresses, they are just shirts that are much longer but not as long as dresses. This trend can go as flashy or as subtle as you choose. This isn’t so much a new idea for men, just a new take. You guys remember the “tall tee,” right? Here is one by Rick Owens that offers an easy transition from waist length to tunic style.
So fellas, there is no excuse to still have your same wardrobe from 10 years ago. Catch up with the times and revamp your wardrobe.
