Rosie Assoulin
After Rosie Assoulin spent time interning for various designers such as Oscar de a Renta, Adam Lippes, Brian Reyes and for Lanvin in Paris, The self-proclaimed ‘student for life’ finally gathered enough courage to design a collection of her own. She launched her first solo collection for the Resort 2014 season.
Assoulin specializes in modern evening wear separates with structural silhouettes. With each of her collections she continues to push the elements of design, while sticking to what she is good for; creating drama with ease. With her debut Resort 2014 collection Assouline stuck with a predominately black and white palette as opposed to her Spring 2014 presentation. Her spring collection was a vibrant mix of poppy red, bright green, muted yellow and deep sky blue. With Assoulin’s third collection she incorporated lines to make the collection appear more graphic while her latest collection, Resort 2015, the designer focused on incorporating organic fabrics. The use of raw linen and raffia hemp were seen throughout the collection. With her Resort 2015 collection she also integrated more day-time offerings.
Assoulin leaves you wanting to know what’s next in the seasons to come.With only 4 collections under her belt she has already gained attention from major fashion buyers, the industry’s top fashion editors as well as notable press. Currently, 9 U.S. stores and 12 international retailers are carrying her brand. In the next few years to come you can expect to see her line in many major top-tier department stores.
Rachel Comey
Since 2001 Rachel Comey’s collections have been inspired by what she finds interesting and and not dictated by what the fashion industry deems as trendy. She’s all passion, dedication and whatever else she is feeling at the moment. Her clothes have a sense of humor, chicness and most of all wearability. It’s vintage inspired with a cool girl feel.
Since the beginning, Comey has self-funded her brand. She is one of the few designers who can say that they’ve been completely independent from the start with out any outside financial funding. It was only a few short seasons ago when Comey decided to introduce a denim line to her collection. You wont see skinny jeans or any of the other denim trends that are out there with this designer. Just like the other garments in her collection, she designs at the beat of her own drum. The denim that she brings to the market are full of experimental washes and silhouettes. This June she launched her flagship store on Crosby street in New York City.
Studying her first collection until her most recent one, I’ve learned to always expect the unexpected. She is truly a designer for people who aren’t into major trends and don’t enjoy being replicated. You will be able to carry almost every single one of her pieces throughout every season. Her pieces are cool girl timeless.
Ostwald Helgason
The design duo, Susanne Ostwald and Ingvar Helgason, are great for surprising you with their unexpected silhouettes, bold color combinations and comfortable knits. Their core customer is not characterized by age or social status, but rather by her attitude and the way she presents herself to the world.
With their Resort 2015 collection they’ve experimented with new fabric treatments and combinations. They have also brought sport-smart technology from their past fall collection into their most recent one. It was loaded with detail, but nothing overbearing. Susanne Ostwald has a background in fine arts which is often times incorporated into her collections. This can clearly be seen in their Resort 2015 collection where color blocking and abstract geometric shapes were seen throughout the collection.
Even though the brand was founded in 2008, they have only been participating in New York fashion week since 2013. Needless to say, they have grown tremendously since their debut. Their collections are full of energy and exudes a playful, feminine and quirky personality. Only time will tell as to the amazing collections they will produce.
